You will be the same person as you are today in five years time except for the people you will meet and the books you will read, is a famous quote from Charlie “Tremendous” Jones. There is no doubt that books are life changing so for the next series of blogs I want to pick just a few of the books which for me have been the right book at the right time.
In our home we have many, many books on many, many topics. I have always considered books a treasure and you can tell a lot about people by glancing over their bookcase; perhaps not so much nowadays as many folks reads online. Still, I am a fan of the written and printed word and really don’t think one can beat a good book.
My first book is the Bible. It is beautifully written; it is Living. Its purpose is to transform heart and mind and it has the power to do so.
I enclose a few quotes by persons more erudite than I:
“It is impossible to enslave mentally or socially a Bible-reading people. The principles of the Bible are the groundwork of human freedom.”
– Horace Greeley
“The Bible contains more true sublimity, more exquisite beauty, more pure morality, more important history, and finer strains of poetry and eloquence than can be collected from all other books, in whatever age or language they may have been written.”
– Sir William James
“I thoroughly believe in a university education…but I believe a knowledge of the Bible without a college course is more valuable than a college course without the Bible. Everyone who has a thorough knowledge of the Bible may truly be called educated.”
– Dr. Wm. Lyon Phelps, Yale University
