#18 Traveling Wilburys. Handle With Care: 1988.
Question: What do you have when five brilliant and independently successful musicians get together to jam and have a great time ?
Answer: The Traveling Wilburys.
It doesn’t get much better in the music world than The Traveling Wilburys. They are called a Super Band and I guess super is an apt superlative when music greats like Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty come together to simply have some fun.
As George Harrison tells it, he just got together to have dinner with a couple of old mates, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne. They decided that the next day they would have a bit of a jam session, so he rang Bob Dylan to see if they could use his recording studio, but Harrison’s guitar was over at Tom Petty’s house, so Petty came along too and just like that, just like magic, the five of them found themselves in the same place doing what they loved most, making great music.
The inspiration for the title of their song Handle With Care came from the notice on the side of a packing case in the room where the five of them just sat around and pulled lyrics and chords out of the air.
The Wilburys recorded three albums and while they were called “traveling” they did not ever go on the road. The most wonderful thing about them is that they were truly a collaboration of equals. They left their egos at the door while inside everyone took their part, gave their best, had a wonderful time and not one of them ever tried to push themselves into the position of front man or band leader. Their respect for each other was obvious, their talent undeniable and they did not need to compete with anyone to prove their worth.
When you watch them playing together their delight in what they are doing and in each other is simply a joy to see. It makes me wonder what other organizations, whether they be religious, political, familial, industrial or commercial could be like if we could harness some of that magic that Harrison said brought the Wilburys together.
The next three stories will be about the Traveling Wilburys. I hope you will stay with me. For today though, enjoy the clip. What I like about this clip is the images of them all when they were little tykes.
Handle With Care what good advice for a hurting world; if we could just remember to respect and handle one another with care.
